Obit: Vera Frances (Bumstead) Vogel, b.1899 Beloit, WI
LOVES PARK, IL – Vera Frances (Bumsted) Vogel, 105, of Loves Park, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at her daughter's home in Loves Park.
She was born June 1, 1899, in Beloit, Wis., to George and Euretta (VanHoozen) Bumsted. The family moved to the VanHoozen farm near Greenwood when she was 7 years old. She graduated from Woodstock High School and completed one year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, obtaining a special teaching certificate, after which she taught high school English at Greenwood School for three years. She married Howard E. Vogel of Richmond on Oct. 14, 1922.
She was a lifelong member of Greenwood United Methodist Church, where she participated in various church projects and activities into her 80s. She lived for 77 years on the Vogel farm near Richmond until moving to Christian Life Retirement Center in Rockford in September 1999. In September 2003, she moved to the residence of her daughter, Nancy, where she lived until her death.
Survivors include three children, Mary Lou (Vernon) Jensen of Woodstock, Gerald F. (Jean) Vogel of Elkhorn, Wis., and Nancy Vogel of Loves Park; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Vogel of Sun City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Janis (Malachi) Nathan of Studio City, Calif., Paula (Leon) Polhill of Gainesville, Fla., Lisa (Jeff Goldstein) Vogel of Chicago, Cara Jensen of Woodstock, Allan (Kathy) Jensen of Woodstock, Dennis Vogel of Elkhorn, Vicki (Ron) Hellenbrand of Waunakee, Wis., and Gary (Tana) Vogel of Elkhorn; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Evan Vogel; a granddaughter, Susan Jensen; a grandson, Craig Jensen; and two newborn sons, Howard Jr. and Allen.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Scheider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the funeral home. The Rev. Bill Muilkens and the Rev. Darrel Sample will officiate.
Interment will be in Ringwood Cemetery in Ringwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials for Greenwood United Methodist Church or VNA Hospice may be sent to the family.
