GILLESPIE DNA PROJECT
A GILLESPIE surname project has been started through Family Tree DNA.Members of the project will be asked to provide information about their earliest known ancestor to the project administrator. The project can be accessed at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.asp?group=Gillespie&projecttype=Shttp://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.asp?group=Gillespie&projecttype=S
The project requires that a DNA sample be provided by a MALE with the surname GILLESPIE acquired through birth. If you are a female GILLESPIE and want to participate you must find a close male relative and have that person submit the DNA sample. This project tests yDNA which passes from father to son only.
The DNA test kit consists of two cheek swabs - a really quick and easy process.Members of this project should chose the 25 or 37 marker test kits as the 12 marker test kits provide information that is far too general for this study. Results for the 25 or 37 marker tests will be returned in 6 - 8 weeks. The number of DNA markers that you select will determine the cost of your test kit.
The purpose of this DNA surname project is to determine how many separate GILLESPIE lines (of any spelling) arrived in the American Colonies during the 1600's and early 1700's.
This project also hopes to determine which GILLESPIE lines are genetically connected to well known Scottish ministers - Rev. GEORGE GILLESPIE, 1644 - 1725 in Scotland, and his grandson - also Rev. GEORGE GILLESPIE born 1683 in Scotland and died January 2, 1760 in Newark, Castle Co. Delaware where he was Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church from 1713 until his death.
GILLEPSIE descendants of Rev. George Gillespie, b. 1644, whether their ancestors remained in Scotland or emigrated elsewhere, are encouraged to join this project.
The first GILLESPIE to submit his DNA for this study is a descendant of THOMAS GILLESPIE and NAOMI THOMPSON who both died on Dec. 12, 1797 and are buried together at Thyatira Cemetery in Rowan Co. North Carolina. The birthplace and parentage of this THOMAS GILLESPIE has not been determined.
Connie McKenzie - GILLESPIE PROJECT GROUP ADMINISTRATOR - and please be patient as this project is just in it's infant stage with a novice administrator :-)
