I retrieved most of my HEDGES photos I have referred to in the past week, except for the main ones of my direct line, i.e. WILLIAM CHIDSEY HEDGES and his wife ELIZABETH JANE (WITCHER) HEDGES, even though there is one photo of him that I have in the batch I found, and Iíll tell you more about that one in a minute. My main photos are in my albums, which are still buried. I rambled through the garage Saturday and finally got to the box that most of the others were in. My wife and I are planning to purchase a home-sized fireproof and waterproof safe sometime in the next few months, Lord willing, and all this stuff will go there as it properly should.
I am in the process of typing out a list of HEDGES family photos that I have (with all the connected surnames, of course), and the approximate year that I initially assigned to the pictures several years ago. There are still some questions I have as to who is who in some of them, and if the year should be more properly closer to one date than another, but most of these photos were labeled and identified by compiling the invaluable statements and labeling of FLOSSIE HEDGES HAYES (b. c.1904 - I have the actual date on file somewhere), REV. WILLIAM FULTON HEDGES (b. 1902), my gramma AUDREY LUCILLE WHETSTONE HART (b. 12 Jan 1913), and my great-uncle GEORGE ALLEN HART (b. 18 Aug 1913), all in the years c.1986 through 1993 or so.
There is one large family group photo which has been a great puzzle for me, however, and when I am soon able to send you copies of all these, perhaps your dad or other kin up there may be able to help. I didn't mention this one before because I had completely forgotten about it. I have tentatively identified (with the above help, and also with photographic comparisons to the other pictures I have) some of the key people in it, including the patriarch WILLIAM C. HEDGES. I also believe that DILLIE WALLS HEDGES and at least the four daughters of REV. FULTON HEDGES are in this picture. But many of the rest of them I am unsure of, and the above-named help couldn't make them out very well either, partly because of the small size of many of the faces, but also because they really didn't think they recognized the people other than, "Well, they LOOK like family, but who belongs to who is hard to tell." Our collective guess puts some fairly solid names on a few, some very "iffy" labels on some members, and still remains clueless as to others. We surmised that the majority of the clan shown were from one of the branches of the family that either moved to Arkansas and came back to just visit when this photo was shot, or they may be children, in-laws and grandkids of one of the siblings of WILLIAM C. HEDGES or ELIZABETH JANE (WITCHER) HEDGES. (ELIZABTEH JANE had apparently died before this picture was taken, which would match the era and ages of the people that we guessed at their identities, i.e. pre-1917.)
I scanned most of these pictures on Monday, 13 March 2000, starting with my lunch break at work. I scanned each entire picture, cardboard borders and all, revealing the photographer's studio name when applicable. I scanned these in full color so as to reveal their variety of antique sepia tones, and most of these were scanned at 300 dpi resolution, and some at 600 if the faces were tiny and will later warrant great enlargement. My scanner has the capacity for 1200 dpi, and I will use that just to make two or three special enlargements of a selected face from a group photo, such as that of WILLIAM C. HEDGES in the photo mentioned above.
Iíll begin making known this list under a new header in the HEDGES Surname database, and will resume correspondences with you there. Iíll title it HEDGES PHOTOS - 1800ís to EARLY 1900ís.
I will also be starting a second header in the HEDGES Surname database under the title HEDGES-WITCHER of KY, TN, & White Co.,IL. It will be addressed to YOU, and in it will be the beginnings of some of the data on the family that I have, and will begin an ongoing list of citing my sources, etc., and will be a sort of work in progress, kind of like a web-site, I suppose. I have to re-type all this stuff anyhow, so I might as well share it as I go, or perhaps no one will get any of it because I never seem to be ďfinishedĒ enough with the grand total product. Some of my relatives have been waiting for several years, but I just have not been able to collect all my stuff together in on intelligible format for someone else to benefit from.
So, seeing how I am all for free genealogy on the Web (double-checking sources, mind you), I feel that this may be a way of doing this for the immediate time. Soon, I hope to have my computer problems corrected and will be able to share GEDCOM files and all that junk.
Well, Mary, gotta go. Iíll see you next on the HEDGES Surname Forum.
