Research of the MAXWELL family has been in progress by a number of `cousins' for more than 20 years, and in recent years we have been sharing the fruits of our labors. This forum is not the most ideal place in which to give you details on the extended MAXWELL or ROGERS/RODGERS clans, but I shall provide a very brief history of the early generations as they are known to me.For more detailed information, please click on my name to locate my e-mail address.
It has not yet been proven, but appears reasonable that the patriarch of the MAXWELL clan was one Solomon MAXWELL, landowner in Fredrick and Shenandoah Counties, VA.He was likely born prior to 1715. It is said that he had at least two wives, Jemima ROBERTS (d/o Jno ROBERTS and Mary HART), and Abigail (nee unknown).
Solomon died about 1770 in VA, presumedly survived by Abigail. It is believed Jemima had died sometime in the previous 30 years. Probate papers for Jemima and/or her father are said to be on file in Hunterdon Co, NJ, and are said to contain the names of most, if not all, of her children, possibly including the following. An exact order of the births is not known, but Thomas is thought to have been among the youngest two.
1. John
2. Keziah -- md Solomon SMITH
3. Martha -- md Samuel DETON or DONTON
4. Abigail -- md Isaac ODELL
5. Eliabeth -- md Samuel SMITH
6. Ruth ?? -- md Thomas PRICE
7. Thomas
My research focuses next on one Thomas MAXWELL, bn ca 1855/56, who rec'd a land grant in 1793 from NC for land in Sullivan Co, TN, which had been carved out of Washington Co, NC, in 1779.This Thomas MAXWELL was a high-ranking militia officer (possibly major), who went on to become a court magistrate, moving his family from Sullivan Co, TN, through Williamson, Carter, and other counties, until settling at last in Bedford Co, TN, sometime prior to 1812. During this time, he became acquainted with such men as Abraham BYLER (sheriff), Nathanial TAYLOR, Meshack HAILE, and Jno KING, among others.
Nathaniel TAYLOR opted to remain in the military, and deeded his land in Bedford Co, TN, to Thos MAXWELL and Abraham BYLER, the latter adding considerable acreage later, some of which is known today as `Byler Bottoms' to long-time Bedford Co, TN, residents. Some of BYLER's children would intermarry w/grandchildren of MAXWELL.
Thomas MAXWELL died sometime after the 1830 Census, but prior to the Summer of 1832, when some of his heirs began deeding their shares of his estate. No probate file has been located as yet. However, seven heirs have since been identified. It is not know if there were others who might have retained their shares for themselves, and thus were not identified in deeds.
1. Solomon MAXWELL (1780-1852) -- md min 2x -- 10 children
2. John MAXWELL (c.1783-mid 1800s) -- md Sarah COOPER -- possibly 8 ch (incl Cyntha and Keziah ROGERS)
3. Daniel MAXWELL (c.1788-1856) -- md Mary BELL -- possibly 7 ch
4. Thomas MAXWELL (c.1793-1860) -- md Lydia A (nee unkn) -- possibly 10+ ch (incl Mgt ROGERS)
5. Elizabeth MAXWELL (c.1795-1852) -- 2d or later wife of Meshech HAILE -- 9 ch + min 3 step-ch
6. Keziah MAXWELL (c.1800-187_) -- md Evan RUSHING, Rbt TAYLOR, Abner STEED -- 3 dau by RUSHING
7. Jemima MAXWELL (c.1805-186_) -- 2d or later wife of Jno KING -- 9 ch + min 3 step-ch
Of these, Solomon, Daniel, Elizabeth, and Jemima moved to Randolph Co, IL, prior to the Fall of 1832.Some of the younger Thomas MAXWELL's children would do likewise (notably Mgt who md James ROGERS). John and Keziah remained in or near Bedford Co, TN.The younger Thomas MAXWELL was given the task of settling their father's estate and selling the latter's holdings. He then moved to IL prior to 1840.
Solomon MAXWELL (my ancestor) and the KINGs settled in Perry Co, IL. Daniel and Thomas MAXWELL and the HAILEs settled in Washington Co, IL.Children of these couples were also found in Randolph, Jackson, and Saint Clair Counties, IL.
I do not know where most of these individuals are buried. Solomon and his last known wife were buried on his farm near Winkle, Perry Co, IL.The recently rehabbed cemetery is known as Spring Hill.I have, however, with the aid of numerous `cousins' around the USA, compiled a list of descendants of the above named seven heirs of Thomas MAXWELL, the elder. If our speculations are correct that Solomon MAXWELL and Jemima ROBERTS were the parents of Thomas, my list now spans 12 generations. I would welcome the opportunity to add your family to this list. Information included are full names, full dates of birth/mg/death, plus a two-letter abbreviation for the State or country in which each event took place.
My contact in the ROGERS family has been notified of your interest, and I feel certain would welcome the chance to fill you in on James' background, thus providing you a more balanced lineage for your Solomon.
