I am curious - do you have a David H. McCrery, born about 1777 in South Carolina, or a David Hawthorne McCrery, born 10 August 1830 in South Carolina? It's been a while since I looked at that particular family, following up on some queries posted elsewhere on the Warren county boards. I posted some information on them on an old website that I created (partly for the programming experience, and partly to solve the problem of sending marker photos via dial-up connections). The website is still up, as I had no need to take it down. I believe most of the photos were taken with an old Polaroid digital camera, very crude by today's standards. Here is the link, if you would like to have a look:

I've actually known some of this particular family's descendents, who are still in the Monmouth area. Again, for the most part, these people were all Presbyterians, and pretty much married within the church. Some had ties to Monmouth college early on, which is still church owned. I've connected to some of them remotely, through various family intermarriages.

The "Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900" does list Thomas McCrary and Margaret Allen as married in Jefferson county on 30 September 1834.
