As Joshua Woodford Coates and various Ray families are distant relatives of my wife's, I thought I'd look into your question a bit. Today, I read in the 1886 Warren County History on Joshua Coates. It mentioned how he was orphaned at an early age, and went on to be one of the finest citizens of the county. Not one mention of any wives or children in the whole article.

I checked the Warren County Death Index (1874 - 1979), and did not find Ida listed. There is no headstone listed in the Warren County Master Index. I suppose it is possible that she died in Knox County, as a large percentage of her family had moved to Abingdon. Even if she didn't die there, perhaps she is buried there.

At first, I thought it would be easy to figure out who her father was, and hopefully her mother too. You've probably seen the following census listing -

1880 US Census - Berwick Township, Warren County, Illinois
NA Series: T9 Roll: 256 Page: 112D
Josiah SMITH, Self M W42 Married Farmer OH VA OH
Mary J. SMITH, Wife F W 39 Married Keeping House TN NC TN
Monroe MARKS, Other M W 25 Widowed Hired Man-Works On Farm IL CT NY
Ida NANCE, Niece F W 16 Single House Work IL TN ---
Charles NANCE, Nephew M W 6 Single IA TN ---

Mary J. Smith was the daughter of John Webb Nance and Nancy Simmons (I've found much more than I'll type here, but will forward it if you want it), and married Josiah Smith here in Warren County. Now, whether Charles was Ida's brother or cousin is not known from this. This would indicate that Ida was born about 1864 in Illinois, and Charles in Iowa about 1874.

The Knox County Portrait and Biography Album lists 11 children born to John and Nancy Nance, and of those, only 3 would have been old enough to have been the father of Ida; Rufus D., born 20 February 1837, Francis M., born 20 February 1838 (I may have miscopied the days here - one was born Feb '37, the other Feb '38), and Charles W. born 11 August 1844.

Rufus Dodds Nance married twice in Illinois. Alice Sauter in Knox County 1861, and Josephine "Joysay" Thurman in McDonough County. I thought perhaps Ida was Alice's daughter. However, if the Charles Nance shown in the 1880 census with Ida and Aunt Mary Smith is indeed Ida's brother, then it is not likely that Rufus is their father - Rufus had a son named Charles that was several years younger than this Charles, and born in Kansas, not Iowa.

Francis M. Nance moved to Avon, Fulton County, Illinois, after serving as a 2nd Lt. in the Civil War. He is shown with a very young wife in the 1870 census, and a daughter age 3. In 1880, the family has grown, and they show a son the same age as Charles. It doesn't seem likely that this Charles was their son, but it remains possible that Francis was still the father of Ida.

Charles William Nance was age 25 and still living with his parents in the 1870 census. It doesn't seem likely that he was Ida's father, but it seems most likely that he was the father of Charles shown with Aunt Mary in the 1880 census. The younger Charles, I believe, is shown in the 1910 and 1920 census of Chicago. As for Charles William Nance, I haven't found anything on him from the 1880 census forward; perhaps he died, leaving son Charles Jr.

Here's my own personal guesses; just hunches, and absolutely no proof, but I will follow up on them. First, I think Rufus was the most likely father of Ida. It would seem likely that Rufus would place a young daughter with family following the death of his first wife. Where was Ida in the 1870 census? Mary and Josiah Smith appear to have been in Polk Township, Jefferson County, Iowa in 1870, but not Ida. Perhaps she was with another married aunt, or her mother's family? I think Charles was most likely Ida's cousin, due in part to the spread in their ages, and the many conflicts which seem to eliminate them as siblings.

Hopefully, my wife or I will have a chance to look for Ida and Joshua's marriage license sometime this week. I think Illinois licenses required parent's names at this point. As Ida would have been about 17, it's likely a guardian of some sort would have had to sign for her. There is also the chance there would be a marriage announcement in the local newspaper.

I am curious if you had any clues that I missed, or other theories on her parentage. I'll paste some of the census records and such below, in case you might find them interesting. If you would like more information on the Coates family, you might try looking up postings made by Gwen Hobbs, or her gedcom "Guinevere60". I forwarded a lot of Coats/Coates family information to her, to help fill some of the gaps she had. She also lists some Clayton's and Ray's. The gedcom "Vendingace", also at Rootsweb/Ancestry has much more Ray information. I'll post back what I find on Ida, hopefully in the next few days.
