I need help with sorting out the various Mathew / Matthew Stokeses in Union County, Illinois (IL). In particular, I am having trouble with two Mathew Stokeses who were born about 1810.
The first Mathew Stokes was born about 1811 in North Carolina and died in September 1870 in Anna, Union County, Illinois, according to the "U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880". At first, I thought that this Mathew Stokes was the son of the John Stokes who was born about 1778 in Virginia (VA) and died in 1856 in Union County, IL. This John Stokes emigrated to Union County before 1820.
However, I then stumbled across a second Mathew Stokes. This Matthew Stokes was born about 1810 in Illinois, according to the 1880 Census for Stokes Township, Union County, IL. He was living with a young wife named Hannah and a daughter named Matilda.
Who are these Mathew Stokeses? Which one is the son of the John Stokes mentioned above? Who is the other one?
