Proof of Heirship - Estate of Thomas J. Niles
State of Illinois, Stephenson County: Andrew J. Niles of said county being duly sworn on his oath says that he was well acquainted with Thomas J. Niles, late of said county, in his life time and that he is the Administrator of his estate, that the said Thomas J. Niles died without children and left no widow.
That he left surviving him no parents, that his brothers and sisters living at the time of his death are the following viz. Leonard H. Niles, Erastus Niles, David Niles, Lorana Waldo;
That his brother Sanford Niles, deceased, left children surviving him Erastus Niles, Lydia Niles, Mary Niles, George R. Niles and Benjamin Niles;
That his brother Hiram Niles, deceased, left him surviving, Louisa Niles, Harriet Niles;
That his sister Lucy Pool, deceased, left her surviving children Calvin Pool, Alonzo Pool, Abigail Pool, David Pool, Lorana Pool;
That his sister Clarissa Marks, deceased, left surviving her at the time of the death of the said Thomas J Niles her children Squire Marks and Calista Webster, both of whom have since died intestate -- that Calista Webster left her three infant children surviving, that this affiant does not certainly know their several names;
That the said Squire Marks has also deceased and left no children but left his father John Marks and his sister Calista Webster his only heirs surviving;
And further this affiant saith that he knows of no other heirs of the said Thomas J. Niles. (Signed) Andrew J. Niles. Subscribed and Sworn to me this 9th day of July A.D. 1858. D. H. Sunderland, Co. Clerk.

Note: As it took three years to settle this estate, an additional document in the Thomas Jefferson Niles probate file mentions the 1855 death of his brother, David Niles, Jr.
Note: Andrew J. [Jackson] Niles was Thomas Jefferson's nephew [s/o Leonard Niles & Polly DeMaranville].
