Hi Robin, I'm not sure how to download the photo from the website into my photo program so if you could e-mail it to me at llouchard at hotmail.com I'd appreciate it. Is there a possibility that the "3" in 1853 is an "8"? Is his age inscribed on the stone, or is that inferred from the date? Following is the information I have in a somewhat lengthy and confused fashion: My ancestor, Maria Churchill, b. 1820, first married Levi Wilcoxen, Jr.on 26 Jun 1845 (IL marriage records). In 1850 she is living alone with 2 children, Abigail and Thompson. I don't know where Levi was, but he died May 13, 1852. There may have been a child, Harriet, b. 1850 who died before the next census, or she may be the same as Elisa, b. 1852 who is in the 1860 census. At any rate, Maria had 3, possibly 4 children with Levi. The Illinois land records show that Baltus bought 40 acres at NE 1/4 NE 1/4, Sec 19; Tp 27, Range 7E in April 1845. He also owned land at W2NW and the NENW of Sec. 20, 27N 7E 4th Meridian. Baltus, age 36 (est. b. 1814)is in the 1850 census living in the Darius Phillips household, but mis-transcribed as "Baeton" Lennington by ancestry.com (It's obviously Baltus when you read the original.) Although he is listed as part of the Phillips family, he has property valued at $1,500. "Battus" [sic] Lennington, m. Mrs. Maria Wilcoxon, 18 Aug 1853; License # 457. Stephenson, IL. Therefore, he could not have died in February of that year! In the 1860 census, Maria is living with "J T" [my John Thornton] Edwards and 6 children (all shown with the Edwards surname): Abigail, Thompson and Elisa (all obviously Levi's children); Bolton, age 6 (b. 1854) obviously Baltus' child, Fanny age 3 (b. 1857) and John, 7 months [this is definitely John Thornton Edward's son, John Hugh]. Maria is 12 or 13 years older than John Thornton. It is possibly that Fanny was John's child (he would have been 23 to her 36) but I think it more likely that the death date for Baltus is incorrect and that Fanny was his child. The family legend is that Maria died in childbirth in Illinois and that John T. then took his son and came to California. The latter part of that is verified. John Thornton, his son John Hugh, my gr-grandmother Amy Churchill Rudd (Maria's niece) and her daughter by Rudd were in California by May, 1866, which is when my grandmother was born. There was no mention in the story of John and Maria having other children and I have been unable to trace any of them except possibly Thompson Wilcoxen (there are several by that name) who remained in Stephenson. Some of the children may have died or been absorbed into the Wilcoxen, Churchill or other related families. (I haven't looked for Darius Phillips in 1870. Perhaps he was related.)I have been unable to find any other Lennington families in Stephenson County. I have been unable to find a marriage record for Maria and John T. Edwards. Another oddity: an old map (sorry, I don't have the date at my fingertips, but around 1860) shows the piece of property described above as belonging to "J Edwards". Another map drawn about 1890 shows the same property as the "B. Lennington estate." Did he sell it back to the family? Was the property never legally his? No idea. I hope the above is helpful. I can send you family group sheets and reports if you want them. Thanks, Lorrell Louchard Notify Administrator about this message?
