Batavia (Illinois) Herald, Sept. 20, 1899 Half Century Wedded Celebration of the Golden Wedding of Henry Rathz and Wife. Last week we mentioned that Rev. Father Rathz was attending the Gold Wedding of his worth parents. We find in the Freeport Bulletin the following report that will be of interest to his Batavia friends: Just a half century ago today, Sept. 14, 1849, in the city f New York, Henry Rathz and Miss Mary Sophia Walker were united in marriage. This is their gold wedding day and it was observed in a highly appropriate manner, making it an occasion of much joy and happiness to this esteemed couple and their children and grandchildren. This morning at St. Joseph's Catholic church high mass was celebrated in honor of the event. Rev. Father Geo. Rathz of Batavia, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rathz, was the celebrant. There was a large attendance at the church, many friends of the aged couple being present to assist them in observing the anniversary. After the imposing ceremonies the party was driven to th Rathz home, 26 Ordway street, where a sumptuous repast was spread. After the family and guests had partaken of the dinner an enjoyable time was had in conversation. All of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Rathz were present with their families, many coming from distant parts to help their parents in observing the golden anniversary of their marriage. Mr. Rathz is a native of Baden Germany, coming to this country in 1848. His wife preceded him four years, and several months after his arrival they were married. They resided in Poughkeepsie for several years and in 1853, came west, taking up their residence at Monroe, Wis. Seven years later they came to Freeport and have since resided here. Mr. Rathz, who had learned the tailor trade in the old country, established a business in this city and is one of the best workmen in his line in Freeport. Several years ago he was elected city treasurer in which office he gave general satisfaction and made a splendid record as a city official. There are six sons and one daughter. They are: Rev. George Rathz, Batavia; J.S., Chicago, Henry R., Chicago; F. Wm. and John, Freeport, Charles, Indianapolis and Mrs. Halena Curran, of Portsmouth, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Rathz have also twenty-five grandchildren. ----- This newspaper item is posted as a courtesy. I am not related to nor researching this family and have no further information.
