Thank you for your efforts on my behalf, Marybeth. Neither Rutherford Browning or Robert Browning are any relation to my Brownings. My bunch came from Harrison County, Ohio, around 1852 and went straight to Crawford County. They stayed there until the late 1860's and then began branching out into Effingham, Coles, and Cumberland.

Samuel Browning, his 2nd wife and their daughters moved to Shelby County around 1862. Although the letter I quoted above from his granddaughter states that Samuel Browning was a Civil War vet, he was not. There was just a bit of honest confusion involved. Samuel was a War of 1812 vet.

I suspect Samuel is buried in an unmarked grave and with only three days to go before I make my trip to Illinois I doubt I'll be lucky enough to find any clues before I go. Aain, I truly appreciate your help.
