Hello all, I hope someone can help. For close to ten years now I've been searching in vain to find the burial location of my ancestor, Samuel Browning. According to a letter written in 1933 by Samuel Browning's granddaughter.... "...your great-grandmother [Sarah Ann (Bell) Gaddis] married Samuel Browning, a Civil War veteran. To this union were born Laura Rebecca and Mary Medora 'Dora' Browning. Mary Medora was born in Shelby County, Illinois in 1861 in a double log house, two-family size -- one family in each room. The house was on an acreage near Windsor, Illinois. My grandfather Browning died in this log house." This death occurred in 1866-1870, probably around 1868. Samuel had moved to Shelby County from Crawford County with his wife Sarah by 1865, having sold most of his land there. I've never been able to locate any land purchases that Samuel made in Shelby County, so it is possible he may have been renting his side of this two-family log cabin. Samuel was born c1796 in Maryland and moved to Crawford County by October 1852. He married Margaret Markee, who died in Crawford County in 1856. He then married Sarah Ann Bell, former wife of James Gaddis, in 1857. Samuel and Sarah had the aforementioned two girls. In 1872 Sarah and her daughters moved to Sedalia, MO. I have looked in vain through the published Shelby County cemetery records for Samuel's gravesite. I have assumed he died intestate but have either not found any listed probate records or have missed them. So I turn now to Shelby County newspapers. Perhaps THEY published a notice of his death and/or proceedings of probate. My question, then: what newspapers should I look in? I'd like to know if anyone would have any suggestions or knowledge about what newspapers were published at the time and where I should begin my search. Thank you.
