Hello Susan,
I did some checking around for Charles and family afte 1880 and couldn't find them together. A couple of clues:
In the 1910 census at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, Charles is stated to be 74, widowed, born Kentucky, father born Ireland and mother born Kentucky.
According to the Civil War Muster Rolls information at the Illinois State Archives site, Charles B. was born in Hart County, KY. You have found him working as a farm laborer in 1860 in Shelby County, shortly before his marriage to Eliza Wilson in September 1860. The only Reynolds family with Kentucky ties in Shelby that year was Thomas Reynolds. I located him in 1850 and Charles is not with him. That Reynolds family was from Hardin County, KY.
I looked for Charles in 1850 and didn't find him. When this has happened to one of my family in the past, I have sometimes found that the mother remarried and the child is under the surname of the stepfather, as he would be the head of the household. So Charles could have lost his father and be under the surname of whomever he is residing with.
I think the very best thing you could do is to order the Civil War pension file for Charles. They usually contain a lot of information on the life of the veteran following the war; he would have to list all marriages and their dates, what happened to each wife if there were more than one, such as her date of death or date of divorce. All children under the age of 16 and their birthdates would be listed, also. The soldier would also list all the places he resided between the end of his service and the date of his application for pension. This really helps pinpoint a location to search for records of his family. These files are about $40, but are usually well worth the cost. You can order directly from the National Archives in D.C., or from a private researcher. I have found that the private researcher is usually a quicker turn around and can provide you with the email of the one I use if you would like.
I have all of the Shelby County Cemetery books and will look through them tonight when I have a bit more time. They are only indexed by surname [no given names] and can take some time to go through all of them. I'll look for family members for Charles, too. Let me know if there is anything else to look for.
