Hello Mary,
I found the following for you regarding the YATES family:
Elacy and Catherine Yates Ennis were married 1855 in DeWitt County, IL. They are there in 1860-1870, possibly later, I didn't check as I am sure you already have this. If not, let me know and I'll send it to you.
Catherine Yates was born in Tennessee ca 1834.
The 1860 census of DeWitt County is in poor shape and hard to read at Ancestry.com but I found a transcribed copy at the DeWitt County GenWeb page:

Daniel Harrington to Lydia Yates12 April 1860 in DeWitt County, IL.
He mustered into Co G 107 IL US INF on 4 September 1862 at Springfield, IL. He was released for disablity on 1 January 1863 at Louisville, KY [just 4 months later].
William H. Ennis, son of Elacy and Sarah/Susan King Ennis, was in the same company. Daniel Harrington must have passed away soon after returning home, as his widow Lydia married William H. Ennis in December 1864.
Ennis, William H. to Mrs. Lydia Harrington, 9 December 1864 DeWitt County, IL
1870 DeWitt County census has William H. and Lydia Ennis living next door to Elacy and Catherine; they were sisters.
William had been previously married to Anna YATES, 22 November 1860, DeWitt County, IL. She was with Daniel and her sister, Lydia Yates Harrington in 1860. Confusing, I agree.
Here is the family of the girls:

This William and Elizabeth Yates, probably a brother to Catharine, Anna, Lydia, Elizabeth, Francis, etc. is in DeWitt County in 1860, also. The parents are not there, and may have died in TN and William brought his brothers and sisters with him to DeWitt County. Try checking the 1855 State Census of DeWitt [contact the Illinois State Archives for that census, perhaps the parents did come to Illinois.
At the Illinois State Archives site:
Francis Yates served in the Civil War:

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else. I know it's confusing!
Regards,
Barbara
