Oak Ridge Cemetery Records of Interments record the death of Mary DEAN 13 Feb 1875 'Burnt'. Is there any likelihood of an obituary at such an early date or a record of the circumstances of her death?
It's likely her husband Eli, left with young children to raise, remarried later that year, as he is recorded 'Mar' in the UK 1881 Census although no wife or children were with him. Details of a Sangamon Co. marriage between an Eli DEAN and Emma HATCHETT 18 Aug 1875 do not assist identification of Eli but the Licence was issued at Springfield the same day and the marriage was conducted by James A. Kennedy, Justice of the Peace. No couple of that name features in the 1880 Federal Census and there is no indication that Eli ever returned to USA after 1881 although two sons - William and Edward - surfaced in Indiana, together, in 1900. Eli died in 1915 and was interred in the churchyard of Combe St Nicholas, Somerset - his parish of origin. Edward - born Springfield Dec 1873 - is untraced in any UK or USA Census until 1900 - but he named his second daughter Emma and his marriage particulars confirm his parentage Eli DEAN & Mary nee HOWELL.
Any advice or assistance in unravelling the mysteries will be most welcome.
