My 2nd great grandfather, Benjamin Boice was born in Barry, Pike, Illinois (written without commas in a journal)in October 1839 and I was essentially interested if it was Barry the town or township. Benjamin's parents were LDS converts from Upper Canada who fled Far West Missouri and were probably among those who settled at Mormontown. Josiah and Peter Boice/Boyce appear on the Pike County 1840 census and Peter has a deed recorded ca 1840 or so. John, the father of Benjamin left the area as John's wife died in Hudson, Ohio in February 1840. It is believed the family had decided to return to Upper Canada as did some of the settlers in Adams and Pike Counties.
There are those visitors to Carthage and Nauvoo who seem very surprised that there is a "Mormon History" a little further east in Illinois.
