Charles Gray, father of David Burton Gray, was the son of Daniel W. Gray and Ann Sweet. Daniel W. Gray was the son of Daniel H. Gray who was born in New York, moved to Missouri/Illinois in the early 1830's and eventually settled in Texas. Daniel W. was born in New York, married Ann Sweet in Pike County, IL. on Dec 10, 1838 and died (1864) returning home after selling some cattle in St. Louis (believed to have been robbed and murdered). His wife Ann had died prior to his death which left the children parentless. As a result, they were farmed out to various relatives

Ann Sweet was the daughter of Ira Sweet and Sarah Hadsell who migrated from Rensselaer County, N. Y. to Pike County, IL. in 1838 I have traced the Sweet family back to the mid 1600's in Salem, Massachusett's Bay Colony if anyone is interested in this line.

Daniel W. Gray and Ann Sweet had the following children:
Josephine (questionable)
Ira, b. abt 1841/42. Married Henrietta Craig
Sarah Ann, b. Nov 27, 1842
Dorwin, b. Feb 10, 1844 - does not appear on the 1850
or 1860 Census with others in the Gray family so
may have died as a child.
Horatio, b. abt 8146
infant, b. Dec 20, 1848 - died as a child
Daniel, b. abt 1852
Reuben (or Roby) b. abt 1854
Charles, b. abt 1856. Married Mary Hull
William, b. abt 1858
