I think my great grandfather, Sylvester Burns, was indentured to Ernest Meier on May 19th, 1881 in Monroe County, IL. He was brought to the New York Foundling Hospital in 1876 by his Grandmother who said he was 6 days old. He was later sent out to Illinois in 1881 on the Orphan train. My mom said that Sylvester was always treated well by the Meier family, though never adopted. He was of Irish decent and I guess the Meiers (German) could not pronounce Sylvester so they renamed him John. My great grandfather switched his name back as an adult. Does anyone have old family pictures? I would love to know if my great grandfather was in any of them!!
