Hi Doris,

I'm not related, but I am originally from Morgan County and I do have access to the 1830-1840 censuses. I have not yet found John Stockton or Stocton in the 1830 census ( I find James and David) but in 1840 the reading is as follows for John Stockton:

2 males under age 5, 1 male age 5-9, 2 males age 10-14, 1 male age 15-19, 2 males age 20-29, 1 male age 30-39, 1 male age 40-49, 1 male age 50-59

1 female under age 5, 1 female age 5-9, 2 females age 10-14, 1 female age 15-19, 1 female age 20-29, 1 female age 30-39, 1 female age 40-49 and 1 female age 60-69

1 person engaged in agriculture, 1 engaged in commerce
11 people under age 20, 7 age 20-49, 20 people total

You might use this link to the Morgan Area Genealogy website. They have census readings for 1850-1870, cemetery readings, and other resources including a link to the Secretary of State's marriage index. If your ancestor spent any time in Morgan County you should be able to find some information here:

Good luck!
