William Wylie Burns

My Great-Grandfather, George Edward Honley was born about 1840 in Illinois. But family legend insists that his birth name was William Wylie Burns. He is said to have joined the Union Army in Illinois during the Civil War. He later killed a Union Officer in an altercation and deserted. He then shows up on the 15th of March, 1866, in Tennessee where he married A. C. (Claudia) Dilliard. They later moved to Arkansas where he died about 1900. His wife's maiden name was Hutchins. She had been previously married to a Dilliard. I wonder if anyon can verify this change of name. As you can easily see this lack of verification creates a dead-end in my research. I will be eternally grateful for any help.
