Hi,Thomas Kerwin. Thank you for the information about Harm Cape as being possibly Hiram Cape. Hiram Cape was born 16 Jan 1878 and the census record for Harm Cape shows that person as born in January also.

Now then, about the John Cape and Lucinda Irving. Here is the conflicting information. Hiram Cape's death certificate shows his mother's maiden name as Lucinda Gordon. Prudence Cape who was orphaned shows her mother's maiden name as Lucy Gordon.

There is a Lucinda Gordon born in 1856 shown in the 1870 census as 14 years with a Lucy Gordon age 58 born about 1812. They are in Kentucky.

I saw the John Cape and Lucinda Irving also so now, there are 3 names, Irving, Gordon, and Travis. There was a Lucinda Travis in Crittenden County but that one is ruled out as I have information about who she married.

With regard to Hiram or Harm, could his wife Minnie have been a Travis? Who knows?

I have the record of marriage for Maggie Cape and for a Sarah Cape and I do believe they could certainly be sisters and daughters of John and Lucinda. Compounding the problem is that in the 1880 census Jack is the name shown and Jack appears in Shawneetown in 1870 as well.

According the the records from the Illinois Children's Home which was in 1893 known as Children's Home and Aid Society of Illinois, the family was shown as parents being John and Lucinda Cape. The father was shown as deceased and the mother ill.

The birth dates for the four children placed out are as follows: Sarah Cape b. July 25, 1881
Richard Cape b. Sept 3, 1885
Prudence Cape b. Nov 23, 1887
May Cape b. July 8, 1891

So given those dates, the father John/Jack was at least alive in 1890. No census available for that year.

I have records showing the whereabouts of May my grandmother. And for Prudence also who married a Perry Freeman, he died. She then married Arthur McTee, he died and then she married a Cottrell.

Her stepchildren she raised believed her to have been 73 when she died as she claimed to have been born in 1897. In fact, they never knew she was orphaned. The reason I have the right Prudy is because my grandmother May was raised by a family that had a daughter and after my grandmother's death, that "sister" continued to write to Prudence.

So, what I would like to find is a record of death for a Lucinda Cape from Gallatin County, ILL and a John Cape from Gallatin County who died prior to or during the year of 1893 when the children were placed out from the home.

The Children's Home records shown clearly that they were from Gallatin County. They may not have been there when they went to the facility but the family is clearly there in 1880 with Maggie, Thomas, Hiram and Sarah only a few months old in the census listing.

So, that is where I am at. No record of death for Jack Cape or John as Children's home records show. No record of death for Lucinda Cape. Maiden name of Lucinda Cape is not certain either. Richard disappears off the radar. Thomas not sure of , although there is a Thomas buried in a National Cemetery in Pulaski which is near Alexander County I believe. Hiram did definetly reside in California and die there. He passed away at the State Hospital in 1938 and is buried in Ukiah, CA. Prudence is buried in Wyoming and May, my grandmother is buried in Ness County , KS.

Thanks for bearing with me on this and the real key , I guess is to find some record of death for Lucinda and her husband or to ascertain if in fact Lucinda Irving is the one who is the mother of all these children. OR if the Maggie Cape and Sarah Cape who married a Mellon and Chanault ever had children and they have descendants who have information.

Thanks again, David
