I'm searching for information on my McDowell family in IL.
Robert McDowell was born in Ireland in 1812 in Cty Longford. He came to Brooklyn in 1851. His wife was Eliza Byrnes from Ireland. I don't know if they married in Brooklyn or Ireland.
Their children were Eliza McDowell b. 1851 in Michigan
Robert McDowell b. 1852 in Brooklyn, NY
Ellen McDowell b. 1859 in Brooklyn, NY
Robert moves to CO and in 1886 marries Sarah "Sadie" Ann Freeman, born 1865 in VA. They have three children:
Ada McDowell b. 15 March 1890
William Freeman McDowell b.18 June 1893
Another child was born before 1900 census and died.
Robert is the Secretary/Auditor of the Colorado-Eastern Railraod.
William, Ada, and their mom Sadie move to Chicago, IL about 1917. William registered for the WW I and gave his address as 4211 Berkeley Ave, Chicago. He's a traveling salesman for Quaker Oats. He's married and has one child. I do not know the name of his wife or child.
The SSDI has three likely entries for these people:
William Freeman McDowell died in Chicago in Nov 1872. Last Zip is 60690
Ada McDowell died in Nov 1981 in Chicago zip 60611
Ada provided the information on her mother's death certificate (I have a copy). Sadie (Sarah Ann Freeman)McDowell died on Nov 23, 1950. They were living at 5320 Harper in Chicago. Sadie was buried in Oakwoods, Chicago, IL and the undertaker was Chas. F. Bil*** & Son located at 5203 Lake Park Ave, Chicago.
There is also another Ada McDowell who could possibly be William's daughter. She was born in Apr 1917 and died in Chicago 60619 on 17 Oct 2001.
Other information gleaned from various sources reveal that a Yolanda McDowell and John Wesley McDowell were relatives. Children of William? Yolanda was born on Apr 27, 1917. John Wesley McDowell was born on April 27, 1917. Can they be twins? The address shown for them is 7342 S. Maryland Ave, Chicago 60619.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can find out more about my family? I don't know where Robert McDowell died. Sadie owned the home where she died.
