He should be in either Wisconsin or Illinois in 1880.

I cannot locate the precise record; it may be your great great grandfather was staying with relatives in Chicago or some other situation out of the norm, and is not properly counted as an additional person in that household. Perhaps the interviewer was confused by the similarity of names and wrote one down and not the other.

I do not have access to obits for this period, but perhaps that might help fill in missing blanks for you. Ask someone to make a search.
