Am looking for information on any of Thomas J. HANNON's relatives. Perhaps this information will also benefit someone else in their research. -------------------- Thomas J. HANNON was born Kouts, Porter, Indiana 15 Jun 1855. His birth parents are identified as: father: Michael /Hannon/ mother: Eleanor /Milligan/ (Also shows as Mulehon) History of Porter County BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT: [CI:104:?4:CI](HPC) Thomas J. Hannon, of Kouts, Porter County, Indiana, one of the prominent farmers and stock-raisers in this community, was born in Porter County 15 June 1855, and all his life has lived within its borders. He is the son of Michael and Elinor (Milligan) Hannon, both natives of Ireland, who immigrated to America in 1848. (See Text for Michael) Michael Hannon was a farmer and passed his life in that occupation. Ten children came to them, five of whom died in infancy, those who survive being Matthew, Mary, David, John and Thomas, the latter of whom was the youngest born. When the Hannon family settled in Porter county, the community was in a most primitive condition. The prairie was in a state of pristine wilderness, and wild game of all the varieties peculiar to this section of the country abounded. There were few settlers, with not more than six cabins between Kouts and the now thriving city of Valparaiso, then a mere hamlet. The Hannon children attended such schools as the county provided in those early days, and of the five who lived to grow up to years of maturity, Thomas J. and John were the only ones who remained in the family home, -- a fact which might be accounted for in view of their being the youngest children. In 1886, when Thomas Hannon was thirty-two years old, he married and built a little home on the old family homestead, and there continued in the operation of the farm with his father. The parents passed away some years ago -- the mother in 1896 and the father following in 1900. Upon their death, the old home passed into the ownership of Thomas and John Hannon, and Thomas has since continued in the worthy work which his pioneer father began so many years ago, and in which the son gave valuable assistance from his boyhood days. The farm has increased in production and value worth every passing year, and is now regarded as one of the finest agricultural spots in Porter County. Under the able management of Mr. Hannon nothing has been left undone that might conduce to the general productiveness of the place, and it is a splendid example of what may be accomplished by the application of a generous portion of thrift and energy. The home is one of the finest to be found in this section, and is entirely in keeping with the strictly modern method which Mr. Hannon endorses and applies in the management of his farm. As previously mentioned, Mr. Hannon was married 15 June 1886, his wife being Miss Ellen O'Donahue. She was born in Valparaiso, Indiana, in 1859, and is the daughter of Florence and Mary (Hurley) O'Donahue, both natives of the Emerald Isle, as were Mr. Hannon's parents. The O'Donahue's were farming people also, and Mrs. Hannon was the youngest of their ten children. Two bright and promising children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hannon -- a son and a daughter, who are named John and Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Hannon are communicants of the Roman Catholic Church, the faith in which they were reared by their parents, and are faithful and generous in their adherence to that church. They are among the most highly esteemed residents of the town and county, and have a large circle of friends in the community who have known them practically all their lives, and who are appreciative of the high order of citizenship represented by the family. From Mary Margaret KELLY Christensen. (1977) My Grandfather Thomas Hannon, was mostly a farmer. My Uncle John took over the farm when he got too old. My Grandfather had the nicest place you could imagine. There were trees out back, which they called a grove. He had a buggy and a couple of horses. One horse was named "Old Bob." The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) spread yellow paint all over his red and white barn. When they had the driveway put in, it was cinders from burnt coal. Ellen (O'Donahue) Hannon was my grandmother. She and my grandfather had two children, one boy and one girl. I think she had a couple of brothers who never married. She had a sister whose married name was Stevenson. They had two daughters. My grandmother didn't exactly get along well with her family. She was a grade school teacher. She was an immaculate housekeeper. She had our family and our cousins over on Sunday mornings, after Mass, for cake. She and my Grandfather moved into the town of Kouts when they got older. EVENT TEXT: THE TORNADO -- From Kouts Centennial Book (1965) The longest officially recorded tornado traveled 293 miles in Illinois and Indiana on May 26, 1917 and lasted 7 hours and 20 minutes. Its forward speed was 40 mph which is about average. But tornado speed had varied from 5 to 139 mph, and this tornado found Kouts. It was a hot May Saturday becoming sultry in the afternoon, the storm clouds began to gather, the winds rumbled faintly in the west and steadily grew more audible. The black clouds gathered to the northwest and hung heavy. As the thunder became ominous, the strong southeast wind stopped blowing and not a leaf moved. An observer noted that the black clouds had two funnels as they roared in from the west after devastating Hebron and countryside. It then struck a bewildered townspeople most of whom were gathered for supper for the hour was 6 p.m. In the town it dipped and rose and on one dip it completely destroyed the Christian Church and on another dip the Catholic Church, creamery and roller milles. Not a business building nor home in town escaped undamaged. Accompanying the furious wind was a hail storm with some stones as large as hen's eggs and a torrential rain. The once beautiful trees in the Pennsylvania Park were felled or sheared off or were wrapped in corrugated metal roofing from the coal docks two miles west of town. Other trees throughout the town were uprooted, twisted and snapped off. But the countryside near Kouts perhaps was the scene of the worst damage. The farm house of Joseph Cannon north of Kouts was twisted and torn away from the foundation, and the furnishings scattered to the four winds. All the members of the family were more or less injured. South of the Joseph Cannon home, the John Dunkle home was destroyed and the son injured. And on the road running east, south of the Cannon home, the power of tornado seems to have bent all its energies. Here the homes were swept away completely. Since they had no basements, scarcely any mark of their whereabouts could be found. In this area the storm brought death to D.B. Resh, and aged farmer, and Julia Lane, fifteen, when their respective homes were swept away, and Wilbur Dunkle and the lane baby were hospitalized. Dr. Dittmer's home at Kouts was used as an emergency hospital. Here those suffering with minor injuries, were treated and a comfortable home found for them. The storm then proceeded northeastward toward Wanatah; here it turned and came back and struck Marshall Grove, causing heavy loss at the homes of John and Tom Hannon, John Welsh, George Koontz, Nelson Hughes and Jerome Bartholomew. Few of those in the stricken district were protected by tornado insurance for the great majority had never believed this protection necessary in this part of the state. After the storm the agents had all they could do to attend to the demands upon them for policies. And a tornado of much lesser proportion did strike Kouts on May 28, 1935. From Agatha Riley (2002) The tornado that hit the Hannon farm tore down everything except the family home. There was a checkbook found in the yard from Chicago. 12. Census 1920 26 JAN 1920 Thomas was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Kouts Village, Pleasant Township, Porter, Indiana. Head Age/Sex: 65/M. Details: Farmer. Individuals linked to this event include: Thomas J. /Hannon/ (Head of Family); Ellen /O'Donahue/ (wife); James Thomas /Kelly/ (son-in-law); Mary Cecelia /Hannon/ (daughter). 13. Death 9 APR 1929 Thomas died 9 Apr 1929 Kouts, Porter, Indiana, at 73 years of age. 14. Burial His body was interred Kouts, Porter, Indiana, St. Mary's Cemetery. Cemetery: St. Mary's Cemetery.
