Need help finding an obituary for Alton P. NOWAK
Posted by: Susan (ID *****4240) Date: October 04, 2002 at 16:27:44

I am frustrated with the Numinent Report I received from the SSA!

I need to identify the parents of Alton P. Nowak and would like to find out where he died..if he died in Illinois--or elsewhere
on 6 November 1990. I would like to locate an obituary which might tell me what I need to know...

With that thought in mind, I sent for a numinent Report on:
ALTON P NOWAK Request Information (SS-5)
SSN 327-30-5294 Residence:
Born 13 Dec 1906 Last Benefit:
Died 6 Nov 1990 Issued: IL (1952 And 1954)

I sent for a Numinent Report (an extraction)
All that was on mine was:
SSN
Name: Alton NOWAK
DOB: 12/13/1906
DOA (Date of application?) Jamestown, NY
CYD (Date record established): 12/19/1968
Sex: U (unknown)...that was it! No names for parents

The SSA are receiving almost 4x the original amount for a copy of the original
SS Application and 2x as much for an inadequate "extraction"..I'm certain it
slowed down the number of requests being made of them..but they ought to be rolling in the $$$ now...when we have no other
option we will be forced to pay the exorbitant amount for the information---one would think that this is a violation of FOIA in
some way...the information is available..but hardly "free".

The SSA has a lot of nerve raising the price from $7.00 to $27.00 (more than 3x the previous price)..then charging $16.00 for
what turns out to be quite inadequate information for family researchers...I wonder how many
researchers they have tricked in this way...I avoided sending for the numinent until I had exhausted all other resources to
positively identify the parents..I did this as a last resort...in fact--I got more from the read out of the SSDI at ancestry. com for
free than I found on the "Numinent" report they sent me.

Just a warning to all--don't expect to find much on the numinent report...

Hoping someone might have a clue to help me...all suggestions appreciated.

Susan
