I am not the most knowledgeable person on Father Chiniquy, but he was an interesting character. He was a Catholic Priest and was a key factor in the migration of many French-Canadian families from Quebec coming to the Bourbonnais/St. Anne area of Illinois. He wrote articles urging them to come to this area of the state where they would be able to keep their French customs, language etc. It was actually pretty true. The families followed him to Kankakee and Iroquois counties in the 1850s and formed French communities. 66 years later when my mom started school she had never learned a word of English. Chiniqui was the Priest of the Roman Catholic church in St. Anne. But he was contoversial. Part of the controversy that Chiniqui had with the Roman Catholic church was that he did not do the Mass in Latin. He spoke the mass in French. The Roman Catholic Church oredered him to stop saying the mass in French . Eventually the Roman Catholic church of St. Anne split. Some of the people in St. Anne like most of my family remained members of the ST. Anne's catholic church, others followed the Priest Chiniquy and formed another church. Families were split apart when some followed Chiniquy and others remained Roman Catholic. Sometimes brothers never spoke to each other again. If I remember correctly part of the split had to do with the catholic church burning down. Some people blamed Chiniquy. I believe that is why Abraham Lincoln defended him. The church that Father Chiniqui formed is still in existence but it really isn't the Presbyterian church. I am trying to remember from several years ago , but I think the church is called the Reform Catholic. Father Chiniquy's book is on line.
