In the 1860 census for McHenry Co., IL, the Newton HYDE family was listed immediately following the F.A. STEWART household (McHENRY COUNTY ILLINOIS 1860 FEDERAL CENSUS, published by the McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society, 1986: 130). F.A. STEWART was my gg-grandfather.
In that year, F.A. STEWART’s father, John, was living with F.A.’s brother Chauncey [1860 U.S. pop. sch., Walworth Co., Wisconsin, Town of Linn, Post Office Geneva, Dwell. 534, Fam. 59; National Archives Microfilm Publications, Microcopy 653, Roll 1434, Vol. 18 (1 - 753)]. Also in this household were listed these P[earce]s: John, age 27; Ellen, age 28; and Lyman, age 24.
In the 1870 U.S. census, John STEWART was no longer in Chauncey’s household [Walworth Co., Wisconsin, Town of Bloomfield, Dwell. 37, Fam. 37; National Archives Microfilm Publications, Microcopy 593, Roll 1741, Vol 24 (1 - 342A)].
Three HYDES are buried next to the John STEWART whose grave, I suspect, is that of my ggg-grandfather; this John died November 6, 1869, at the age of 82 years and 5 months, a veteran of the War of 1812. Do you know if this is your David HYDE, buried next to John STEWART in the Hebron Cemetery?
Hyde, David* 1795-1880 1812 War
Hyde, Dollie Church* 1797-1879
Hyde, Ardella* 1873-1880
(*Some information from new or replacement stone. Cemetery data from Obenchain, Elaine and McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society, McHENRY COUNTY ILLINOIS CEMETERIES, Vol. I, Northwest Townships, published by the Society, 1990: 217.)
I don’t know whether the HYDES and STEWARTS were just neighbors or whether they were also relatives. My STEWARTS of McHenry Co. did have, among previous generations, a CHURCH family connection. These STEWARTS came out of East Haddam, CT, and by abt. 1800 were in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY, then Oswego Co., NY, before moving to McHenry Co. in the 1850s.
An Ellen HYDE also appears to be associated with the STEWARTS. Also buried in the Hebron Cemetery (Obenchain, p. 213) are
Pierce, John 1833-12/3/1884 51y6m23d
Pierce, Ellen Hyde 1832-1922
You will note that their ages based on year of birth match the ages of John and Ellen PIERCE in the Chauncey STEWART household in the 1860 census. I think that the Pierces were cousins of the STEWARTS.
