The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Saturday, april 13, 1905

The sad intelligence was received in Chariton last week of the death of MRS. ANN NEWELL, until recently of this city, which occurred at Castroville, Cal., on Tuesday evening, April 4, 1905, after an extended illness with liver and stomach trouble. The remains were shipped to this place, arriving here Sunday night, and on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, conducted by Dr. D.C. Franklin, and under the auspices of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of Rebekah, of which orders she had been a worthy member. At the close of the services the remains were interred in the Chariton Cemetery.

ZIPORAH ANN COLES, eldest daughter of ROBERT and LYDIA COLES, was born in McDonough County, Ill., in the year 1827. In 1848 she was married at Eddyville, Iowa, to THOS. NEWELL. Of this union there were seven children, five of them preceding their mother to the better land, one, MRS. MARGARET DAWSON, going on before just two short months ago.

MRS. NEWELL united with the M.E. Church when but sixteen years of age and has held her membership in the same church here at Chariton ever since her residence here which has been since the year 1861, her husband being called from her the same year. After his death she lived with and cared for her father and mother until their deaths in 1884 and 1888. Two years ago the 30th of this month, she, with her daughter and family left for California, visiting in several places until in August she went to Los Angeles, to visit her brother, WESLEY COLES, and attend the general conference of the M.E. Church, but was there only one day when she fell in descending the stairs and fractured her hip. This fracture was only partially healed when she had the misfortune to fall a second time and break her wrist, necessitating close confinement and great physical suffering which no doubt hastened her departure.

Besides her son in Vacaville and daughter in Castroville, Cal., she leaves five brothers to mourn her death. In their great grief the sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of this community. MRS. NEWELL or "AUNT ANN" as she was familiarly known by her many friends, will be greatly missed. She possessed a happy, pleasant disposition and was constantly striving to help others and lend assistance whenever a helping hand was required. The news of her death brought sadness to many hearts here in Chariton where she lived for so many years.
