James Gilmore b ca 1824
I am trying to determine if Samuel and Nancy (Roberts) Gilmore of Indiana and Madison County, Illinois are the parents of James Gilmore who was born about 1824.In tracing back from the last census he is listed on I am unsure if he really is Samuel and Nancy’s son.It seems strange that the James Gilmore with facts shown below would be listed with Samuel and Nancy Gilmore in 1850 if he were married with a son by 1850.
Facts:
1.James is on the Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa, state census for 1885, widowed with four adult children and a daughter-in-law.His age is 62 and he claims to have been born in Virginia.
2.James and family (wife Mary, sons George, Frank & Lewis/Louis and daughter Nettie/Henrietta) are on the federal census in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa in 1880.James is 57 and claims to have been born in Virginia.Nearby is William who may be James’ eldest son.
3.The federal census of Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois, 1870 shows the blended family: James (47), Mary (44), William (23), Charles[Wallace] (20), Preston [Wallace] (18), Adeline (18), Frank (12), Louis (10), Henrietta (6), George (2).Living next door are Mary’s mother & brother.
4. On the 1865 Illinois census the family is in Township 5, Madison County, Illinois and contains the following people:
2 males under 10, 3 males 10-20, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 50-60
2 females under 10, 2 females 10-20, 1 female 30-40
Total of 12 persons, 6 pupils, value of live stock $600
[2 males under 10 – Frank & Louis,3 males 10 to 20 William Gilmore, Charles & Preston Wallace, 1 male 30 to 40 – James, 1 male 50 to 60 – unknown???, 2 females under 10 Henrietta & perhaps they lost a daughter between Louis & Henrietta??, 2 females 10 to 20 – Fannie Wallace, Adeline Gilmore, 1 female 30 to 40 – Mary
5. On the 1860 federal census 4th Ward, Alton, Madison County, Illinois, the family appear without surnames for Mary’s children from her first marriage.James is 36 and Mary is 34 with Fannie, William, Charles, Preston, Adeline & Frank. Also included is Mary’s mother.
6.James Gilmore married Mary [Kalbfleisch] Wallace, widow of John Wallace February 5, 1856.
7. 1855 census of Alton Township, Madison County, Illinois
James Gilmore:1 m. under 10, 1 m. 30-40, 1 f. under 10, 1 f. 20-30
Could be children William (b. ca 1848) & Adeline (b. ca 1852)
Mrs. J. Wallace (Township 5): 2 m. under 10, 1 f. under 10, 1 f. 30-40
Could be children: Fannie (1846), Charles (1850) & Preston (1852)
8.1850 federal census – no record of James with a wife and child.John & Mary (Kalbfleisch) Wallace are living in Alton.
9.Son William indicates he was born in Illinois (1848-49) but states his parents were born in Virginia.
10.Illinois Marriages
Gilmore, James -Beasley, Martha, 1842-05-11, 002/ 00000685, Macoupin County
This marriage seems the most likely IF James was married in Illinois.Macoupin County is
just northof Madison County.Date would work for the two children, but there is a large
time gap between 1842 marriage and birth of William in 1848-49.
Birthplace varies with census years and sons’ responses:1860-Ohio, 1870-Indiana, 1880-Virginia, 1885-Virginia, 1900-Virginia or Kentucky, 1910-Virginia, 1920-Virginia.
Does anyone have know if this James is really the son of Samuel & Nancy?Or who his parents might be?
Thank you, Elaine
