Death notices in Chicago Tribune (1860 - present!) - free online database

Go to and use 'guest' as both your username and password. You should see a link for "America's Obituaries & Death Notices". One of the many newspapers to search is the Chicago Tribune whose historical archives go back over 100 years ago to 1860! It is not complete but there is tons there.

If you do not see a link for the death notices then perhaps you are using a computer from a library or school which may already has its own subscription to NewsBank which does not include the death notices. If so, then just try logging in from someone's home computer.
