Nauvoo IL. Settlement

Does anyone have information on the settlement at Nauvoo IL and the folks who lived there? I was told that it was settled by Mormons after they were ran out of Missouri.I had family who lived there ond in 1853 they died there. Something about their daughters' husband shot and killed the father Thomas and a one month later the mother Margaret died of a stroke. Both in 1853. They had 10 children, but I don't know how many were living with them at that time. Maybe three. It is a very big mystery that I am trying to solve because I think I found them in Ohio as well. They were Thomas and Margaret or (Margaretha) S. Applegate.
