Brown Baby Kidnapped in Nauvoo/1880
Posted by: Jane Henderson (ID *****7176) Date: July 25, 2005 at 16:56:16

My g-g-grandparents, Andrew McKenzie Brown and Anne Knox Brown settled near Nauvoo after immigrating from Scotland. They had two children, John Knox Brown and Frances Penman Brown. Frances (Fanny) was kidnapped by a woman living in Nauvoo when she was a baby. Her brother later saw the woman who had taken her and alerted his mother. She rescued Fanny, but immediately fled back to Scotland with her children under the name Campbell. They stayed there for some time, returning to Grundy County and Andrew Brown, who stayed behind and moved away, once again named Brown. I am wondering if anyone knows or can tell me where to find out about a criminal case like this that happened there circa 1880? I am curious as to what happened to the woman who stole great-grandma Fanny, if anything. That Anne fled so shortly to Scotland after recovering her child and took an assumed name makes me wonder if she did something she could not take back, or perhaps they were here illegally? Any assistance in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated.
