Was there a Gallatin mine in the 1800's?

I read somewhere that Nelson Reed Lurton owned a mine in Gallatin. Do not know if this is a town or county name. Can anyone help me with this? Would really appreciate any information. Have run into a brick wall on finding him and am just taking a shot in the dark that Gallatin may have the information about who he was and where he came from. He was my ggggrandfather.Have guessed that he was related to the Reed and Nelson families because of his name. My own great grandfather was named John Nelson Scott. He was born in the Jersey Co., IL area.
