I have been looking at these Edwards County families for a while now, and have a theory. The family of James Elliott, born 1798 in Sussex, England, traveled from England to Canada between 1831 and 1834. A son, Daniel was born in Canada. Between 1834 and 1838 they moved to Athens County, Ohio, where James Jr. was born. In the 1840 census of York township, Athens County, the entry for a James Elliott lists: Males, <5=1 (James Jr., 1838 Ohio), 5-10=1 (Daniel, 1834 Canada). 10-15=1 (William B, 8/30/1829, Sussex), 40-50=1 (James, 1798 Sussex); Females <5=1 (?), 5-10=1 (Jane, Christened 8/30/1831 Sussex), 10-15=1 (Sarah, Christened 10/14/1827), 15-20=1 (Mary Ann, Christened 5/29/1825 Sussex), 30-40=1 (Jane, Christened 11/28/1808 Sussex). The George Elliott family (my line) arrived in New York on 11/27/1834, and traveled to Athens County, Ohio. The Family included George - 1767; Rhoda - 1792; William - 3/29/1815; Henry 5/20/1817; Charles - 10/25/1819; Sarah - Nov 1821; Samuel - 4/22/1825; James - Jan 1828; Mary Elizabeth - 4/13/1831. A family of Gumbrells arrived in Athens County in the mid 1840's. The family included: Moses - Feb 1817; Sarah - Oct 1819; James - Dec 1823; David - Dec 1826; Hannah - 5/31/1829; Mary - 12/16/1832; George - 12/9/1834. George and Sarah Saxe came to America on 8/5/1856 and came to Edwards County, Illinois. I have been going through census records, Histories at the Edwards County Historical Society, headstone information in Edwards and Wayne counties, and many on-line sources. The families come from the same area in England, all less than 7 miles apart. They lived close together, many appearing on the same pages of the census Here is my list of connections: 1. Samuel Elliott (George’s son) married Hannah Gumbrell on 1/6/1848 in Albion, Edwards Co, Illinois. I’m sure, they’re my grtgrtgrandparents. 2. Charles Elliott (George’s son) married Sarah Elliott (James’s daughter) on 2/6/1847 in Athens Co, Ohio 3. Sarah Elliott (George’s daughter) married James Gumbrell (Hannah’s brother) on 1/8/1843 in Athens Co, Ohio 4. Moses Gumbrell (Hannah’s brother) married Mary Ann Elliott (James’s daughter) on 11/3/1843 in Athens Co, Ohio. 5. James Elliott (George’s son) married Jane Elliott (James’s daughter) on 8/15/1849 in Albion, Edwards Co, Illinois. James didn’t come home from the Civil War. His widow, Jane and family lived next door to Charles and Sarah Elliott. 6. William B Elliott (James’s son) married Eliza Short on 8/28/1853 in Albion, Edwards Co, Illinois. William was killed in the Civil War, and is buried in the National Cemetery in Memphis, TN. .His Widow and family lived close to Jane Elliott and Charles Elliott’s family 7. .James Elliott Jr. (James’s son) married Lucy Scarlet Saxe (George & Sarah’s daughter) about 1863 in Albion, Edwards Co, Illinois. James Elliott’s first wife, Jane, around 1855, and he married Mary Darling on1/26/1856 in Albion. They had 3 more children: Wesley Steven in1857, Eliza Alice in 1862, and Lucy E in 1868. Both James and Mary must have died between 1870 and 1880. In the 1880 census, Wesley Steven is living with Charles and Sarah Elliott, Lucy E is living with George and Sarah Saxe, and Eliza Alice is living with Arthur and Phoebe Saxe-Hortin (George & Sarah’s daughter). I welcome any comments from other researchers of these families, and if you can correct me, please do. Notify Administrator about this message?
