Among the medical practitioners of Douglas County, Dr. Bassett enjoys the distinction of being the pioneer physician of Tuscola. He was the first to take up his residence in the town.
Dr. Bassett is of French and English descent. He was born at Montpelier. Vermont on the 2nd of March, 1829. His father removed to Williston, Chittenden County, Vermont, when the son was five years old. His death, five years later, left the family without support, and Harvey found a home with different persons, working from place to place till he was sixteen, and recieving only such schooling as could be taken advantage of in the intervals of his labor. When sixteen, his mother bought a small farm at Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont, and he went home to assist her in its management. Here he had bettter oppertunities. He attended the Castleton Seminary, walking four miles each day to and from his home.
His tastes led him to adopt his father's profession, that of a Physician. The spring he was 19 he went to Boston, Mass. and secured a position in a private hospital. He read medicine three hours every day beside attending to his usual duties. After a stay here of two years, he returned to Castleton, and continued the study of medicine there, under the direction of Prof. Joseph Perkins, President of the study of medicine there, graduated in June 1856.
Before his graduation, on the 16th of June1855, he had married Miss Euretta Flanders, the daughter of Chapin Flanders, of Jay, Essex County, New York. Leaving Vermont after receiving his diploma, he spent the summer and fall of 1856 among the relatives of his wife in Essex County, New York, and then in December of that year left for the West, whither a younger brother had preceeded him. This brother had located at Tuscola, then just founded, and through his influence Dr. Bassett came to this place. His wife he left behind for a year
