Hi Kay,
I did some hunting for you as I love a mystery! Took some real thought :-) but think I have it............
Martin Luther Sprague's parents are right next door to him, Aaron Butler Sprague and Luvesta Guthrie. In 1910, Luvesta's father, James Guthrie b. ca 1839 IL is with Aaron and Luvesta. These people are all from Fayette County, IL. James Guthrie married Julia Ann Hovey in 1865; she was a sister of your John P. So, John P. Hovey was Luvesta Guthrie Sprague's uncle and Martin L. Sprague's Great Uncle. Following is data in support of my research:

1910 E. Sharon Twp., Fayette County, IL
94/94
Sprague, Aaron B. 30 md. 7 yrs. IL IL IL
Lu V. 30 md. 7 4/4 children IL IL IL
Ryborn son 6 single IL IL IL
Zora daugh. 5 single IL IL IL
MARTIN son 4 single IL IL IL
Maurice son 2 single IL IL IL
GUTHRIE, JAMES father-in-law 71 widowed IL KY TN

note: Luvesta appears to really be all one name. She is apparently named after the wife of Jackson Guthrie [Luvesta Austin married in Fayette County 1-28-1841], who is related to James, although not his mother. James' parents are Thomas and Mariah Guthrie and Jackson may be Thomas' brother. I am finding Luvesta Guthrie Sprague as Lu V. and Lou V., based on census records, I think she may have been Mariah Luvesta, or Luvesta Mariah Guthrie.

1870 Ramsey Twp., Fayette County, IL
329/329
Guthrie, James 31 b. IL
JULIA A.E. 21 IL
Rob't. 6 IL

1860 Ramsey Twp., Fayette County, IL
1518/1531
Guthrie, Thos. 52 farming KY
MARIAH 50 TN
Geo. F. 29 IL
J.A.M. 23 milling IL James A. Guthrie
Wm. F. 19 IL
HOVEY, Julia A. 12 IL
where did Julia's family go?

You will want to double check the marriage when you go to Fayette County [hope you haven't already been there; I answered a message giving you ideas where to search when you go!] as the Illinois Marriage index either has an error, or the original marriage does:
HOVEY, Julia Ann to ALEXANDER, James A. 1-3-1865 Fayette County, IL
James A. Guthrie's middle name was surely Alexander :-)The date fits with Robert's age, he is shown as 6 in 1870, but in 1880 is 14:

1880 Bowling Green Twp., Fayette County, IL
page 43A
Guthrie, James self 40 b. IL f:KY M:TN
Julia A. wife 29 IL MA IL
Robert son 14 IL IL IL
Laura daugh. 8 IL IL IL
Rauleigh son 2 IL IL IL
MARIAH daught. 1 month old IL IL IL b. April

We need to find out Luvesta Guthrie Sprague's birthdate. She is not in the SSDI, nor the Illinois Death Index, so probably died in the 1950's. Her husband, Aaron Sprague died in DeWitt County in 1950, so she probably is there, too. Birthdate should be around April 1880, her age in 1910 is 30, which absolutely works!

Illinois Death Index Pre-1916
Guthrie, Julia died 2 September 1880, age 29
Bowling Green Twp., Fayette County, IL
You can get a copy of her death certificate from the County Courthouse in Fayette when you go. The cemetery will be named on it, but not her parents that early.

1850 Fayette County, IL
368/377
Hovey, George W. 45 cabinet maker b. MASS
Nancy 40 IL
Eliza A.J. 7 IL
William J. 5 IL
Henry S. 3 IL
JULIA A. 2 IL
JOHN P. 1 IL

Let me know if anything is unclear; I know it is a very tangled web :-)
Regards,
Barbara
