Charles (1800 - 1864) and Nancy Root (1802 - 1868) were b in upstate NY and had seven children. They came to Mattoon prior to 1860 with the four youngest:Tracy b 1830, Elizabeth b 1833, Ellen Amelia b 1836, and John Root b 1839. In 1860 census Charles owned a hardware store and Ellen and John Root were living with him. Elizabeth m John F. Gurley in 1852. John and Tracy both served in an IN unit in Civil War. Tracy m Caroline Johnson and settled in Neoga. Elizabeth and John Gurley later moved to CA, don't know when. The parents died in the 1860's. By 1870 there is no trace of Ellen Amelia or John Root Kingman. What happened to them? Did Ellen marry? Was John Root killed in Civil War or did he move on?
