Dear Mary Kay,

According to the book I have the foundation of the Immaculate Conception Parish was laid in 1852. Father John W. Crowe became pastor in Mattoon in April, 1878. He was instrumental in the purchase of the land and the construction of the present church building. The cornerstone for this building was laid in 1884, hence the centennial celebration in 1984. Record keeping in the Parish was started in 1860, previously records were kept at North Arm, located north of Paris, IL. I am including the email address of the Parish. The current pastor, Father Herman Niebrugge, is very helpful.

If I can help anymore, don't hesitate to email me at

Mary Beth
