Now that we know a little more on this Riley/Raley Family. John Riley born abt 1787 NC was married to a Catherine born abt 1795 MD. We have not learned anymore on their origin. The family consisted of John Harbin SR NC with wife Catherine. It develops that they had they had five sons & one daughter.
James born abt 1819 born OH. Married a Sarah A. Shepherd in Tippecanoe, IN. Son William born abt 1825 IN Married to Elizabeth J. Shepherd. John Raley born abt 1821 IN. Married to Susannah Shepherd. Vesta Ann Riley born abt 1829 IN. married to Davis Foster. Sanford Riley born abt 1835. Marion Riley born abt 1837
James Rilwy died Jan 1848 & John Raley JR died Mar 1848.
John Riley SR directed the court to sell Jame's farmland to cover his debts. I don't know how Sarah & her five children survived but the twin sons born Mar 1848 were living in the home of William Riley & John's widow Susannah Sepherd who was later married to Thomas Chaney.
In about 1850 we find that John Riley SR , Catherine, Vesta Ann Riley & husband Davis Foster along with Sanford & Marion were on their way to Linn Co, KS. In the meantime I have learned that the twin sons migrated to Saline Co, IL, where Robert Shepherd was living. At one time Robert Shepherd had lived with William & Elizabeth J. Shepherd in Clay Co, IL. It seems that these people remained in Saline Co, IL, until their deaths. I have an obituray for the twins. This answers the question of "Why did the twins move to Saline Co, IL" Seems that there were other Shepherds living there. When John Riley SR died in abt 1861 he sent a message to William Riley 1825 which stated that his son, William Riley of Flora, IL, was his son.
This has brought more to light. John Shepherd with 2nd wife Frances Foster had five daughters & one son. I had received info that Frances Shepherdt was the wife of John Shepherd which is not the case. John Shepherd & Frances Foster were the parents of the fives daughters & one son. If you learn anymore please keep me informed or make any inquiries.
