I have some information on the Tate family you mention in this query. I am descended from Elizabeth Frances Tate, sister of John F. Tate, and wife of John William Padgett.

Ahnentafel Chart for John F. TATE

First Generation

1. John F. TATE was born about 1852 in , , IN. He died 29 Oct 1929 in , Coles, Illinois, USA. 1880 U. S. Census of Clay County, IL.!
Illinois Death records January 1916 - December 1938. The 1880 census of Clay County, IL., shows that Lockwood Tate and William Thomas Tate are brothers living with John H. This is proof that John is the child of Thomas Tate. He Married Elizabeth Holman 9 Apr 1875 in Clay County, IL, (marriage book E, Page 60).

John married Elizabeth HOLMAN on 9 Apr 1875. Elizabeth died before Jan 1927 in Illinois.

Second Generation

2. Thomas W. TATE was born about 1810 in , , Tennessee, USA. He died after 1880 in , Clay, Illinois, USA. Thomas married Mary Ann Sarah ELLIOTT on 30 Oct 1836 in , Crawford, IN.

!1840 U. S. Census of Crawford County, Indiana, p.454
!1850 U. S. Census of Crawford County, Indiana, Jennings
Twp. p. 54.
!1880 U. S. Census of Clay County, Illinois, Stanford Two.
There is much conflicting information about this family at
this time. The only marriage record found to this date is
one for Thomas W. Tate to Mary Ann Elliott, however, the
application for a Civil War Widow's Pension for Elizabeth
Tate Padgett, his daughter, states that her mother's name
was Sarah Elliott. Since the marriage of Thomas occurred
in 1836, and Elizabeth, the eldest child listed in the
1850 census, was born in 1841, it is possible that Mary
Ann died, and Thomas married Sarah Elliott. The 1850
Census says his wife's name is Mary A. It is also
possible that Thomas's Wife simply changed her name to
Sarah. There is a probability that Thomas W. Tate was
married several times. The Zachariah Tate who was living
with Thomas Tate and Mary Ann Tate in the 1850 Crawford
County, IN, census, would be to old to be the son of Mary
Ann; therefore, it is possible that Thomas was married
prior to being married to Mary Ann Elliott in 1836. It is
possible that Zach Tate is the brother of Thomas Tate.
The known children of Thomas Tate are: Elizabeth Frances;
George D.; Leodotia; John H.; Lockwood Tate; and William
Thomas. It is not known for certian who their mother's
are. It is possible that Thomas was married to, 1st, an
unknown wife; 2nd, Mary Ann Elliott in Crawford County, IN.
; Sarah Elliott, date and place uncertian, but before 1842;
3rd, Mary Ann Faucett, 3 Feb 1850 in Orange County; and
4th, Elizabeth Raridon, in Orange County on 9 Aug 1859.
In 1870, he is listed in the Census of Orange County, IN,
Orleans Township as a widower living with his two son's
Lockwood and Thomas W. In 1880, Thomas resides with his
Daughter and Son-in-law, John and Elizabeth Tate Padgett
in Clay County, Illinois. Also in 1880, Lockwood and
Thomas W. (William T. in that census) are living with John
Tate, and are listed as brothers.

3. Mary Ann Sarah ELLIOTT was born 1818 in , , Ohio, USA.

!1840 U. S. Census of Crawford County, Indiana, p.454
!1850 U. S. Census of Crawford County, Indiana, Jennings
Twp. p. 54.
The civil war pension application of Elizabeth Frances Tate Padgett states that her mother's name was Sarah Elliott. The Marriage record of Crawford County, Indiana states her name was Mary Ann Elliott, as does the 1850 census record of Crawford County, IN. Possibly the name Sarah was a pet name used by the family since there seems to be no marriage record for a Thomas Tate to a Sarah Elliott, nor does any census indicate there is a Sarah Tate living with a Thomas Tate. This researcher has been unable to find Thomas Tate and his family in the 1860 U. S. Census.

Third Generation
4. Zachariah W. TATE was born 16 Oct 1784 in , , North Carolina, USA. He died 11 Jun 1869 in Paoli, Orange, Indiana and was buried in Old Town Cem., Paoli, Orange, Orange. Zachariah married Elizabeth. Since Thomas named his first child Zachariah, it is most likely that this is the father. Also, there are no other Tate families living
nearby Orange County that would be of the correct age for
Thomas`s father. 1850 census shows that Zachariah was born in North Carolina, as was Elizabeth. Thomas in the 1880 Census says his parents were born in North Carolina. Since Tennessee was a part of North Carolina at one time, it is
possible that Zach was born in a part of North Carolina is
now Tennessee. Records in early east Tennessee are sketchy, but many Tate families do trace their origins to this part of the U. S.
5. Elizabeth was born 9 Mar 1786 in , , North Carolina, USA. She died 23 Sep 1862 in , Orange, Indiana, USA and was buried in Old Town Cem., Paoli, Orange, Indiana.

6. Joseph ELLIOTT was born about 1796 in , , Indiana, USA. He died after 1860 in , , Indiana, USA. Joseph married Frances "Fanny" STEENROD on 13 Apr 1817 in , Belmont, OH.
!1850 Census of Crawford County, Indiana.

It is somewhat a "leap of faith" to add this family, because there is a only a large amount of circumstantial
evidence at this time that they are definitely the parents
of Mary Ann "Sarah" Elliott. Some evidence is that Mary
Ann Elliott Tate and Thomas named their first child
Zachariah J. Tate; most probably after the fathers of each
of the parents. The name of their first girl was
Elizabeth Frances, the names of their mothers. Plus, the
fact that the Elliotts and the Thomas Tates were living on
adjoining residences when the 1850 Census was taken.
In the 1860 census, there are two more children listed
with the family. It is possible that the girl named
Theresa is the daughter listed in the 1850 census as Manirva. However, the child listed as John W. is probably
a grandchild. He is listed as being born in Louisana, and
may have been born when some of the family that navigated
down the river. The Elliott family seems to have been
associated with the river life since they came from Ohio
County, Virginia, and Belmont County, Ohio.

The 1850 census notes that Joseph was born in Michigan,
which is doubtful at the time that he would have been born
ca. 1790. The 1860 census says he was born in Indiana but it is more likely that he was born in Virginia or Ohio.

7. Frances "Fanny" STEENROD was born about 1800 in , Ohio, Virginia, USA.

Francis "Fanny" Steenrod was born in what is now Ohio
County West Virginia. She was listed as being 45 in the
1850 census, so that would place her birth at about 1804,
possibly a little earlier since the 1860 census of Crawford County, IN lists her age as 60. Since she married Joseph Elliott in Belmont County, OH in 1817, The earlier date is probably correct.
