When you refer to a specific census and list the info it contains, listing the actual info is what helps people to be able to look at things to possibly assist.

If someone did a search for Catharine Knott or William Smiley Knott in 1860 Christian Co., IL, so they could view that info, they would not find the census that you were referring to.

That was my purpose in posting. Not to take away from your expertise.

I too am aware that step children were commonly listed with head of household's surname.
