Hello Elizabeth,I am sure that you have heard of Iams Pet Food. Well, Paul Iams was the founder and owner. I wrote to Paul before his death and he wrote back the following:
" In a letter, Paul Iams, gave the following story of his family's trek to Ohio:
Two Iams brothers, Thomas and James of Maryland were in the Revolutionary War. These two brothers wanted to cross a river being guarded by two Hessian soldiers, but when the two Hessians were killed, the Iams boys became too afraid to return home so they walked to Erie [or Greene County], Pennsylvania. It was from Greene Co., Pennsylvania that Eli and his brother [son of Thomas Iams and P. James Iams] walked to Trotwood, near Dayton, in Montgomery Co., Ohio about 1811."
The father of these "boys" was Richard Iiams and Elizabeth Gaither. Paul Iams like his father and ancestors changed their name from Iiams to Iams.
Three of the Iiams brothers married Hampton sisters. My husband is from this line.
