Gordon posted in part, "One side note: another Ijams who seems to have multiple ancestry is William I(j)ams b. ca. 1753 who m. Mary Gill Hampton, and settled in Washington Co. PA. Does anyone know how he fits in?"
William Iiams married Mary Hampton November 29, 1784 in Baltimore Town, Maryland. [Src. Marriage Records of Rev. Lewis Richards, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Baltimore Town, Md.].
Three brothers left Maryland about the same time, and settled in Greene & Washington County, Pa. Richard Iiams b. 1745, m. Elizabeth Pottenger; John Iiams, Sr.[1749/50] m. Elizabeth Hampton March 12, 1791 [All Hallows Parish, A.A.Co. Md.]; Sgt. Thomas Iiams [1754]m. Nov. 29, 1785 Baltimore Town, Md.; William Iiams [1756] m. Nov. 29, 1784 Baltimore Town, MD to Mary Hampton; sister Mary Elizabeth Iiams or Iams b. 1761/1769 m. April 8, 1788 St. Paul's Church, Baltimore, Maryland.
This is important: the 1933 edition of A.A.Gentry by HWN had the wrong listing for the children of Thomas Iiams [1708]. These were corrected in the 1970 edition of A.A. Gentry by HWN because of the bible records in the possession of Miss Mereiweather Waters, late of Gaithersburg, Md. gave the correct children for Thomas [1708. HWN made one other correction in that he agreed that Eli Iiams who married Phoebe Hecathorn was the son of Richard Iiams and Elizabeth Pottenger, but, HWN would not make the additional corrections. In the History Of Madison Co., Ohio, it refers to Richard Iams son of Richard Iiams and Elizabeth Pattenger.
Now, Howard L. Leckey wrote in the The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families, A Genealogical History of the Upper Monongahela Valley, page 480/481, this was actually researched by Jimmy Meighen for Leckey, and Mr. Meighen used the HWN A.A.Gentry 1933 edition to connect these Iiams back to Maryland. This was wrong. Jimmy Meighen used the father of the Iams in Greene/Washington Co., Pa. as Thomas Iiams 1708. Unfortunately, Jimmy Meighen also made some errors in the children of the Iiams' who married Hamptons.
Back to your question about William Iiams. From all data that I have, [Erwin Bickley who worked with Ralph Reynolds and who researched the Iiams lines for many years and from informtion he gathered] William was the son of John Iiams and Elizabeth. William died Feb. 23, 1795 in Washington Pa from Smallox. His wife Mary Hampton Iiams remarried to a man by the name of Curry after William's death. William & Mary had Elizabeth Iams who married Daniel Smith [they moved West], Thomas Iiams who married Mercy Bonnell [not Mercy Walton][Came to Warren Co., then Shelby Co., Ohio], John Iams who married Mary Anna Coulson [remained in Washington Co., Pa.and Mary Iames who married James Bratton Sturgis and they moved to Morgan Co., Illinois.
I have been touch with some Gaither researchers but so far, they have nothing solid on Elizabeth Gaither who married and Ijams?
Sorry this was so long. Probably wrote more than necessary. Roberta
