Hi Linda,You certainly gave me something to think about and try to solve. I would certainly like to have more information on "emancipated mullatto slave named Sarah." "In the will of Benjamin Gaither, he writes, "To Benjamin Ijams, son of Sarah Ijams, all land whereon he dwelt with adjoining plantations and the personal estate except the Negroes who were to be set free."The executors of this will were Benjamin Ijams and William Peach, Jr. brother Benjamin Ijams,. The witnesses to the will were Richard Isaac, Joseph and Isaac.
This Benjamin Ijams is not otherwise identified, but it is known that he "soon disposed of his possessions." Furthermore, in 1809 law suits were filed by other members of the Gaither family over the ownership of the the thirty slaves, based on the executors that were described as "who not being able to execute the trust," and "the personal estate" was sold May 23, 1809, at the store of Wesley Meeks of Prince Georges County, Maryland. However, no court record of the distribution has been found.
Sarah Ijams' identification as mother of the heir Benjamin Ijams, has never been made with certainty. It is believed that Benjamin was born to Sarah Ijams before her marriage to Benjamin Gaither, or was sired out of wedlock. Likewise, the relationship of Sarah to William Peach, Jr. brother of Benjamin Ijams remains unknown. [Harry Wright Newman, Anne Arundel Gentry and Iams of America by Ralph D. Reynolds. M. D.]
