my mistake! Hugh Iams gives his age as between 70 and 80 on the 1830 and 1840 census. He's gone by 1850. This pushes his birthdate back to the 1750's, much more in line with being a brother to William Sr. US genweb now has Bedford censuses online up to 1850. The 1790 is so basic, just males over or under 16, but on it can be found William Iams, and Hughey and William James as heads of families. Checking the nearby clans, finds the James' on or near the Spurgeon's Choice property occupied by the Iam's to this day. In 1800, they go by the last name "Jims". Later they are "Jiams" Finally becoming Imes by 1840.
