In a letter from Pasteur Denis Vatinel, (on
July 25, 1989) to my Uncle D.T. Igou from France he writes "Your family name which formerly was written in different way: Ingoult, Ingout, Igou...is evidently a name of people of Germanic origin (Ing-name of the people: wulf=wolf). It recalls the Viking Colonization of Normandy. Not all the people of your name apparently do not belong to a single family, since it was used before the actual addition of a given name to family names. The Norman protestants are easy to localize in the in the 17th century;
they are found around le Havre and around Bolbec." The letter goes on to explain a it more about Lewis Igou of Bolbec. I do not believe it means Hugonot although I do believe that the Igou family was part of that rebellion.
