I don't know if this thread is still active but I can help a little with one Leeds family of Idles because they occur in a pedigree of the Cookson family (my interest). This branch of Idles originated in Bulmer in Yorkshire and the earliest one mentioned is Ralph Idle who must have been born in about 1580. His grandchildren were established in Leeds, the best known being Michael Idle who was Mayor of Leeds in 1690. (His daughter Susanna Idle married William Cookson, my relative, three times Mayor of Leeds. HIs sister Ruth Idle was the mother of the well-known Leeds historian and diarist Ralph Thoresby.
The pedigree has an image of the Idle arms (“Sable, a Fess Or, Two Helmets in Chief Argent”). but unfortunately it only takes the Idles down to those born around 1700. However it should be possible to find out more because this family clearly belonged to the well-to-do Leeds merchant class. I have no mentions of gambling, unfortunately.
Let me know if more data would be of interest
