Hi. Joann, Good question. I really don't know. The name Iddings has been confused through the years as having the origin in Welsh, Irish and English. As you perhaps know, the origin is with King Ida a Saxon king of Benicia. Iddings means "Ida's People".
I assume that Isaac was probably jokingly called Irish by his friends and given the Irsh man's name "Paddy." I am sure you also know, that prior to him being elected Judge in Holt Countdy, MO., he was a buggy maker, a gunsmith and farmer.
