I believe that I found your Mary Coates in 1930 living in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA.
Mary Coates, b. MN, 25 yrs old, head household, both parents born England, single, trained nurse hospital.
Olga L. Boline, lodger, single, b. MN, 25.
Perhaps Mary married after the 1930 Census. I'd post a query on her in Alameda Co., CA Message Boards.

I'd try to find a copy of his obituary which hopefully will have lots of info about the family. If you don't know how to find an obit in this county, I'd post an inquiry on San Mateo Co., CA Message Board.

You can request a copy of his obituary from the Washington State Library, www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . They will search the newspaper microfilm for 60 minutes at no charge and email what they do or don't find to you. Takes about two weeks.
After I receive an obituary I use www.whitepages.com or www.zabasearch.com to find current contact info for survivors.
A family tree exists for Harry Gladstone Coates, b. 1898, England and d. 1987, Utah in Ancestry.com. Go to www.ancestry.com and search for Harry under Family Trees. You can access it if you're not a member. It also contains info about the person who submitted the tree. Remember though to use that info only as a resource and not everything posted is 100% true.
