My great-grandfather was a Samuel Crocker. He was supposed to have been of English parents or from England, himself. He had married a woman named Sarah. He was born in 1829 or 30 and Sarah was supposed to be younger or a second wife. She may have been Scotts-Irish and/or English. My grandfather, Claudius (Claude) Merle Crocker was born in Salem, Kansas in 1884. Salem no longer exists. Samuel was supposed to have been his father and Sarah, his mother, even though he would have been born late in their lives or of a second marriage. Claude was also supposed to have had much older siblings and he may have been a child from one of them and raised by Sam and Sarah as their child. Claude Merle Crocker married Janetta Anise Capwell, (daughter of Ida Sterling Capwell and George Fredrick Capwell from Pennsylvania,) in November 1910 in Kooskia, Idaho. Janetta already had a child from another man, and then they had three more children together, before divorcing in 1921. My father, Claude Samuel Crocker, was born Sept. 1914 in Kooskia, Idaho. Around 1890, Samuel, Sarah, and my grandfather, Claude, were living in southwestern Washington State. One of Claude’s older brothers may have lived with them in Washington State. By 1900, they had a homestead near Caribel, Idaho. There was a Crocker Creek that ran through their property. Very little is known about Samuel and his wife Sarah. They might be the same Samuel and Sarah Crocker listed with their four children, Anna, Alfred, Elisabeth, and William in an 1880 Pennsylvania census. The ages for Samuel, Sarah, and the children fit with my Crocker family stories. What is known is that Samuel was about 60 when his son, Claude, was 6 years old. They migrated from Kansas after 1884 to the Palouse Country in Washington State, then to Idaho where Sarah died, then Samuel died while Claude was in his late teens or early twenties, before 1910. Claude was supposed to have been the cousin of a Clayton Steele Crocker who lived in Idaho, then later moved to Montana. Claude lived in California for many years and died there in the 1960s. Claude was remarried in Calf. and may have had more children. I would appreciate any information about Samuel, Sarah, or Claude Merle Crocker from anyone who might know more of their histories.
